We regret to inform you, our Dear Reader, that, on this morning of December 15th, 2005, Pthbbbt.com has officially retired. During its life, it enjoyed a long and fruitful career as a website of whimsical multimedia features, later semi-retiring to the prosperous field of blogspots, where it continued to operate as a sporadic linkfilter of various peculiar interests and themes; among others, bouncy balls, bicycles, boomboxes, and other things that started with consonants other than the letter B. Eventually, Pthbbbt's contributions to the zeitgeist became so prodigious that it eventually became a genre in-its-own-right of perpetuating memes that circulated freely online independent of external intent, thus becoming One with The Internet, much in the way that Neo becomes One with The Matrix.

Pthbbbt.com will be remembered for its light-hearted nature, eccentric interests, absurd taglines, playful self-reference, gentle rapport with the elderly, and playful tendency to wear lamp-shades on its head at parties:
*rolls short film, shakey hand-held slow-motion camera footage of small children rolling down grassy hills and making wishes on dandelions, people eating ice-cream on the beach, soap bubbles floating thru the air, paper airplanes being thrown off of tall buildlings, and a crowd of gleeful twenty-somethings running down a hill followed by a massive avalanche of bouncy balls, bowling balls, beach balls, nerfballs, slinkys—cut to crowd running thru the streets of Pamplona, being chased by bulls— cut back to bouncy balls, then finally settle on long shot of a single bouncy ball rolling down a long highway, finally merging into the sun where it sets on the horizon, all set to gentle classical accoustic guitar accompanied by a child's xylophone*

Pthbbbt has been called many things: a paradigm-dispenser, a meme-geyser, a taboo-breaker, a risk-taker, and many other compound terms that begin with a noun and end with an descriptive action word. But, you may ask, what is the true essense of Pthbbbt? To which we may reply, if you can stick out your tongue, and it feels good to do so— why not do it? Adults of all ages can do it, children can, and often will, do it in the most inappropriate contexts; in fact, humans of all countries, regardless of race, religion, political orientaiton, gender, sex, or class can and do engage in this universal gesture of humanity, this gesture so deeply-rooted in the common genetic pool of life that even monkeys and apes understand its meaning, with no need for pedantic elaboration or ontological interpretation.

And if pthbbbt.com's online contribution can be compared, if you will, to an avalanche of bouncy balls careening down the avenues of the internets, than let us also extend the metaphor to wish that each of those individual bouncy balls will be picked up by someone, bounced a few times, then let loose on its own adventure, perhaps in the workplace, perhaps in the studio, gallery, or workshop, perhaps even in the realm of politics, philosophy, and economics. Indeed, Pthbbbt.com's Brief History of Irony is already an accepted classic text taught in academic institutes across the nation, while the Cloud of Bouncy Balls theory is being applied in social interaction studies, as well as in the field of information architecture.

We hereby award Pthbbbt this, err, silver keychain, cast in the shape of a monkey riding a tricycle, inscribed with the credo, If it's not fun anymore, stop doing it. From us. All of us. To Pthbbbt. Forever in our hearts, in our dreams, and in our thoughts. Especially that 'shake your butt / wiggle that tushie' song, which tends to get stuck in one's head at the most inappropriate times, such as when the optometrist is leaning very close to you and inspecting your eye with a flashlight, so close that you can feel his breath on your cheek and see the fuzz on his ear and then you start to regret having eaten that garlic-hummus sandwich for lunch but then another part of you just can't really be bothered to care, because if you can't eat hummus sandwiches at will, or itch your butt at a gallery opening, or clip your toenails in the street, or dance and wiggle your tushie free of care, then what is this life meant for, really?

Pthbbbt is dead, long live Pthbbbt! Be the bounce, and let the bounce carry you, via unpredicatable ricochets and spontaneous detournements, into new, previously uncharted mental terrain, previously only reached by copious amounts of coffee & cake, coupled with the viewing of Monty Python skits performed by veteran mimes versed in interpretative dance.

Interesting story on the process of inventing colored bubbles and disappearing dyes (you might be seeing a lot more pink poodles very soon). Half-inspirational, half- leaving you with the feeling that humans are very bizarre creatures indeed. Also, stuff like this doesn't exactly, um, reassure you about whether or not toxicity hazards are taken into consideration during the inventing-new-toys process:

Me and You and Everyone We Know

Pretty much the best movie I've seen all year. I'm normally a pretty picky, hard-to-please moviegoer— the kind you'd hate to go to the theater with, because if the movie sucked (*cough* 40-yr Old Virgin, Screaming & Kicking *cough*), you'll hear me whinge about it for the next 2 hours, and you'll probably cringe and look about quickly for the nearest exit, or shot glass, or large heavy object to knock yourself unconscious with, while I ramble on, deconstructing the film's cultural myths and ranting about how dumbed-down, over-simplified, stereotype-perpetuating mainstream pap is constipating & stoopid-ifying (technical term) our culture and bringing about the End of Civilization As We Know It. But yeah, as I was saying— Me and You and Everyone We Know is excellent... I knew I was going to have to watch it again before I was even halfway thru it... darkly humorous, intense, beautiful, suspenseful, delightful, touching (did I just use that word? *cringe*), whimsical, and best of all? the characters are real (albeit fantastically eccentric) people in real (but incredibly bizarre) situations. Not in a gritty, depressing, 'most men lead lives of quiet desperation' kind-of-way, but in an easy-to-beleive (I wanna use the term 'suspension of disbelief' here, but it just seems so English Lit), life is full of random surprises, some good, some not-so-good, some funny, some not-so-funny / life-is-weirder-than-fiction kind-of-way. So, yeah: gorgeous photography, well-synchronized quirky sound-track (I've already ordered it via this Portland distro), and, um, well, I can't remember the third thing... oh, wait-- the kind of dialgoue you'll be reiterating inappropriately in email correspondence and blog posts for weeks, ie; "If it weren't for AIDS, we wouldn't even have email!" Like maybe the best possible mix of Lost in Translation, Punch Drunk Love, and Ghost World. So there. Go watch it already, so I can stop fellating this movie to death. It is a place-holder, on account of the fact that I don't like to look at the actual DVD cover because, unlike the movie, it does not reflect my soul. I know it is not unusual for the director to have no participation in the DVD cover design, but I have these personal standards that, as it turns out, are totally unrelated to the way this business works... I am very relieved because I lost many hours of sleep over the whole thing, especially the tag-line on the back cover: The person you've been waiting to find is waiting to be found. I would lay in bed at night wondering who had come up with this line and how it had ended up on something that was mine. No offense to the person at Sony who thought it up, there is nothing bad about it in and of itself. But for me it is like wearing someone else's hair on my head.

Spotted this outside Godfather's Bookstore. It's a wooden "runner", the pre-cursor to a bicycle. Bascially, you sit while walking/running with your feet-- kinda like a cross between a bike and scooter. The frames looks as heavy as a house, but it actually doesn't weigh much more than your typical walmart made-in-China mountain bike. Not so practical for cross-country touring, but it sure looks like fun for running around town. Mary ran into the gent who built this at the hardware store last week, and he says he'll custom build one for anyone. This is one of his first prototypes-- he calls it his "Woodenstein."

It's a fantastical concept... too bad it's a marketing campaign / (dot-com-era-reminiscent) PR stunt for *ack* Sony. Check out the ~~pretentious~~, err, I mean, comprehensive behind-the-scenes making-of-the-commercial mini-doc, in which the art directors all but confess that the concept was inspired by pthbbbt.com, that zany "web-zine" with a 3-yr long sporadic streak of bouncy-ball-centric posts (one, two, three). Once again, pthbbbt proves itself to be one of the leading architects of the last decade's zeitgeist in design & whimsy. Viva la bola bouncy!

According to an invention of pneumatic membrane mechanism by Shiro Takahashi, when blowing up a piece of membrane formed into a closed shape to form a balloon, the surface of the membrane of the balloon is made to have an expansible margin where the fulcrum of the motion of expansion is created.

Easily my favorite page from Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid On Earth. The first time I read the book, I skimmed over this page of faux postcards without reading the blurbs on the back, possibly because it's 12 paragraphs of text in font size, oh, 2? on an 8x6" page-- and I was too lazy to get up and get my magnifying glass (yes, I do own one... the kind with a light in it, too... I know-- how dorkcore). Anyway, when Mary came across this page, she actually had the gumption to scrunch up her eyes and read the microscopic text to me outloud... hilarious! In a caustic, biting, satiric kind of way. I imagine James Kunstler, the author of Geography of Nowhere, would get a chuckle out of these. Anyway, here's the text, much biggified for your reading pleasure:

Betty arrives home from her long journey (Ohio to Oregon). Mary's mum fixed up Betty (the bunny doll that Mary's had since childhood) and sent her back in a special box complete with a window and ventilation holes. Betty underwent both eye and nose surgery, spent the day at a spa, and was taken to a model shoot. So pampered! No more eye patch for Betty... now she'll expect pedicures and carrot pate everyday.
